Honorable Mention Bearing Gifts Kathy Paupore From winter travels he brings gifts. Wood samples, tongue and groove, to cover the surfaces of his dream. His wife is ill. He will not see it. He gives her a copper hummingbird, a black bear's image on a cedar box. She will keep trinkets inside; iris bulbs, tomato seeds, limestone, raw copper, sunshine. The smell of tung oil mixes with cedar, gives her a headache. He smiles, she wants to keep it, puts it in her chest. Outside, he shovels new snow. Inside, she wonders what it would be like not to worry. Come summer, she will live in a new house.
